Why My Cat Has Stopped Eating?
Posted By : Guest Filed Under : Nutrition | Cats
Cats and food is always an interesting one. Unlike dogs, to whom food is often the ultimate reward, felines are noted for turning their perfectly formed little noses up at their dinner for no apparent reason. And, while the occasionally outburst of food fussiness is nothing to worry about, if your cat has obviously stopped eating, this can be a real cause for concern.   Not eating can have an impact on your cat’s health even after as little as 24 hours. For a kitten, especially if they’re younger than six weeks old, avoiding food for just 12 hours can be damaging. Burgess in-house vet Dr Suzanne Moyes says: “Not eating is really dangerous for cats. When animals don’t eat enough, they must rely on their fat reserves for energy. Before stored fat can be used for fuel, it must be processed by the liver, which requires adequate supplies of protein. With rapid weight loss, protein supplies are soon exhausted and the liver becomes overwhelmed by fat. Th.. [More] catslovingburgess.png

What’s the difference between a food allergy and food intolerance? And how can you tell if your dog or cat is suffering from one or the other? Itchy skin, upset tummy, weight loss? These can all be symptoms caused by diet – although there could be many other reasons why your pet is out of sorts and you should always ask your vet for advice. Food allergy or hypersensitivity This occurs when a particular component of food (usually a protein) triggers the susceptible animal’s immune system to react, for example, cells may release histamine which causes itching. Food or dietary intolerance This occurs when something in the food doesn’t.. [More] dogallergies.jpg

Cats are obligate carnivores. Essentially this means that cats must eat meat or fish in their daily diet and that vegetarianism is generally not considered an option for cats. Their diets should contain a high level of good quality meat or fish and animal fat and small quantities of fish oil are also beneficial for skin and coat condition. Cats require a careful balance of at least 13 different vitamins, plus the essential amino acid taurine necessary to promote a healthy heart and eyes. A complete diet will have all the necessary vitamins and amino acids in the right ratio, either derived from the raw materials themselves or from added supplements. Good manufacturers use protected vitamins to prevent them being degraded by processing. With the right food from a reputable supplier, there is no need to give your cat extra vitamins and over dosing of vitamins can be harmful.   Nutrition For Kittens – A Complete Cat Food Start to feed the mother on kitten food such as ..
